IT Support for Remote Teams: What UK Businesses Need to Know

Remote working is now permanent for most UK businesses. Here's what your IT support should cover when your team works from anywhere.

Remote and hybrid working are now a permanent fixture for most UK businesses. But managing IT for a distributed team creates challenges that traditional in-office support wasn’t designed for — from securing home connections to making sure someone can actually help when a remote worker’s laptop stops working at 8am.

What does IT support for remote teams actually cover?

Remote IT support covers everything your in-office setup would — just delivered over the internet. That means helpdesk access via phone, email, or live chat, remote control of devices to fix issues, security monitoring, patch management, and backup.

A good provider will also supply and manage endpoint security tools on each remote device, set up and maintain VPN access, and make sure staff can reach company systems securely from home or on the road. Many providers now include mobile device management (MDM) as standard — which lets them remotely wipe a device if it’s lost or stolen, protecting your business data even if the hardware is gone.

The biggest IT challenges for remote teams

The main challenges are security, inconsistent connectivity, and slower troubleshooting when someone isn’t physically in the office.

Home broadband is far less controlled than a business network. Remote workers may use personal devices, work over public Wi-Fi, or delay installing security updates. According to the UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey, around a third of businesses reported a cyber incident in the past year — and remote working widens the attack surface considerably. Without proactive monitoring and endpoint controls in place, a single compromised laptop can put the whole business at risk.

Connectivity is the other common headache. When your team is spread across home offices, co-working spaces, and coffee shops, diagnosing whether a problem is with the device, the network, or a cloud service takes longer than walking over to someone’s desk.

What to look for in a remote IT support provider

Look for a provider with proven remote support tooling, extended or 24/7 coverage, and a clear process for escalating issues that can’t be resolved remotely.

Specifically, ask about:

  • SLA response times for remote-only requests — make sure the contract commits to specific times, not just “as soon as possible”
  • Remote monitoring and management (RMM) — software that watches every device 24/7 and flags problems before they become outages
  • Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) — a step up from standard antivirus that actively monitors for suspicious behaviour on remote devices
  • Experience with your cloud tools — if your team runs on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, your provider should know those platforms inside out
  • A clear escalation path — what happens if the issue needs an on-site visit? Will they send an engineer, or hand you off to someone else?

How much does IT support for remote teams cost?

For most UK SMEs, remote IT support costs between £30 and £90 per user per month, depending on what’s included.

  • Basic remote helpdesk and patching: £30–£60 per user/month
  • Managed support with security tools included: £50–£90 per user/month
  • Premium support with 24/7 monitoring and EDR: £80–£120+ per user/month

If your team is a mix of office-based and remote staff, most providers will price on a single per-user rate that covers both. The key is to compare quotes on the same scope — what looks like a cheaper deal often excludes security tools that are included elsewhere.

Getting remote IT support right

The best approach is to treat remote workers as first-class IT citizens, not an afterthought. That means the same security standards, the same monitoring, and the same response times — regardless of whether someone is in the office or working from home.

If your current provider still treats remote support as an add-on rather than a core service, that’s worth questioning. Providers who built their offering around hybrid working will serve your team better and cost you less in the long run.
